Being a business traveler definitely comes with more than its fair share of stress, especially if there isn’t the proper sort of technology in place to ensure that things are taken care of ahead of time. This means, essentially, that far too often there are people who expect a Wi-Fi connection that will work in a hotel room, only to find themselves frantically scrambling for a means to get online before a big conference. And while cell phones might offer 4G connection powers, there isn’t that much that can be accomplished, seriously, through a smartphone with a couple of hours to go. Business travelers have traditionally had to expect that sleep would be lost and everything that could go wrong with tech-related business would, usually a couple of hours before it needed to be perfect.

But there are other options out there for business travelers besides the same old methods of getting online, those that have caused so much stress already and made things less than simple. For one, there is always the option of going with any sort of wireless internet offered in a regular cafe or restaurant, even a chain location like Starbucks. While it’s less than ideal, not depending on the hotel to follow through on its wireless connection is a step in the right direction for anyone who doesn’t like surprises and isn’t expecting to experience one while on the road.

But there are definitely better options out there than your typical old Wi-Fi network. In fact, if you look at how Wi-Fi works, it’s no wonder that half of the time, it doesn’t at all. Because a single router is bouncing a signal from a regular modem, it’s no surprise that people find it difficult to find the signal and get online reliably. This is because the signal can only carry so far, and after that, you’re on your own. This is particularly clear in hotels, when a room might be a floor too far up to still get the signal loud and clear.

Enter the new advantage: WiMax. With this form of wireless, you are online from anywhere. If you need to get online for a couple of minutes or an hour, the steps are the same: you simply turn your computer on, and then it automatically connects to a national network. Because there are no routers involved, only the sort of signal transmission that more closely resembles something like a national cell phone company, you know that you’re always going to be able to get read loud and clear, no matter where you happen to go to for business.

And whether you find yourself on the road for work once in a blue moon, or you’ve recently started making your career out of business travel, the fact remains that it is only as easy as the technology you are able to take with you. And in this instance, it means that making the upgrade to a network that will be where you need to be, when you need to be there, means saving a whole lot of time and not needing to worry about how you can possibly find a Wi-Fi network that will take care of your needs at three in the morning. And that’s definitely a step forward.
